I have a abscess on my gum and the dentist didn't not drain the pus out but they gave me some Amoxicillin instead. I have to go get it pulled my up coming appointment.... So it is safe that the dentist didn't drain it or should I go to the ER to have it done ??? Because its takes up to 48 hours for the medication to even start working. :( - Filed in Amoxicillin

No, that is normal procedure, they do not usually drain them, they give the antibiotic a couple days to work, and then remove the tooth, which allows for drainage.

The FDA lists the typical side effects of this antibiotic as possibly including dizziness, headache, nausea, diarrhea, and non-allergic skin rash.

Most ERs will not touch it, either, but rather refer you to your dentist, as long as you're stable and not in life-threatening danger.

The issue is usually due to the fact that trying to treat it, while the infection is still active does not allow them to numb it, so the pain would be severe.

How are you doing, now? Has there been any change?

I have dentures, now, and have to say that I do not miss dental problems, at all!
