What is the difference between the 2 OTC meds of Pepto Bsmol and Gaviscon ## Hello, Patricia! How are you? Pepto-Bismol contains Pink Bismuth, also known as Bismuth Salicylate. According to the FDA, it is listed as being used to treat heartburn, upset stomach, indigestion and diarrhea. However, Gaviscon as manufactured by Reckitt Benckiser contains sodium alginate, sodium or potassium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate, it is an antacid that's listed by the FDA as being used to treat or prevent heartburn and GERD. Typical side effects to both may include dizziness and flatulence. But, Pepto-Bismol treats more issues, though not everyone is able to take it. Is there anything else I can help with?
