How long will the effects of Valium last? This is not a question about how long it will show up in tests. I need to be able to perform without sedation and am concerned that I will be impaired if I take Valium. My dosage will be one pill [5mg] for one occasion. - Filed in Valium

Valium has a half-life of approximately 12 hours, that's the amount of time it takes for your body to fully process out half of the dose that you take. For it to be completely eliminated from your body usually takes 5 or 6 half-lives, so you'd be looking at 60 to 72 hours for that.

But since you are worried about the sedative effects, then they would most likely not linger past that initial 12 hours, though that can vary from person to person.

Learn more Valium details here.

Thus, you may not want to take it close to the time that you need to be alert.

What are you taking it for?
