i recently had a sent put in for a kidney stone and was given phenazopyridine to take will phenazopyridine plus the blood in my urine make my UA drug test come back as my urine being a substitute (fake urine) my PO said my test came back as being fake urine due to low caratine levels

It doesn't cause a false positive for anything, what it does is completely ruin a dip stick type urine test. The discoloration of the urine prevents them from being able to properly see the results.

Thus yes, you would need to take the test at a later date, you've usually have to be off the medication for 2 to 3 days, for them to be able to perform the test.

Just about every medication can cause a false positive reading, so I don't think you need to worry about Phenazopyridine, especially if you have a prescription for it; in which case, all you would need to do is show the lab your prescription prior to the test so it won't be counted against you.

Furthermore, if for some odd reason you do get a false positive and this is not your prescription, then I would suggest having an additional test done by a gas chromatograph mass spectrometer, which has the ability to distinguish the exact substance in question. This type of testing is not initially performed because of cost, but, is often a follow-up option for those facing serious consequences such as a job loss or jail time.
