Is the formula for Lee's Save the Baby (liquid in the glass bottle NOT the rub on salve) patent protected, does anyone know how to obtain the formula
My mother passed away in December. She grew up in Troy, NY. When we were little, Save the Baby was the 'go to' medicine when you had a cough. I found 2 partly used bottles in her medicine chest. Both of them are in a box with an illustration of a woman. Interested?
Well lets just say the rest of the ingredients are no longer legal....
You can buy Save the Baby at elydrugs medical supply in KY and they offer free shipping.
YAY! other ppl besides me know what Save the Baby is!!! i'm 38 & remember when i was sick, my granny would pour some on a rag, warm the rag over a kettle of boiling water or just open stove flame, then pin the rag to the inside of my jammies. the warmth & the smell remind me of her. i also remember that it also felt gritty, like there was sand in it or something. anyone else remember that part? would love to get my hands on some these days!!
Save the baby did originate in North creek, NY but was produced in Watervilliet, NY. I lived next door to the building where it was made amd when they cooked it, the whole neighborhood smelled of camphor. The woman who owned the company was my "aunt" and my grand mother her secretary. Save The Baby was a wonderfulroduct and has seen it's sidevof pressure from big Pharm in it's attempt to remove this powerful product from the market. Chest colds, no problem. The patent was sold to a company in Canada after her death in the late seventies.
I am doing some historical research about an Adirondack guide who knew Dr. William Lee and told a very funny story about Dr. Lee's daughter Iona. Could you briefly summarize Dr. Lee's time in North Creek? I understand he practiced medicine there during 1910-16, until he fell ill (what illness?) and then became county health official. Is that correct? Anything else you can tell me about him, either his personality or his work? What exactly did Dr. Lee do as a county health official? Finally, do you know of any sources where I could find further information about him? Thanks, and good luck with your own practice.
I still use it and I do get it from that same website. I love the stuff.
Save the Baby when we had it was in a small bottle in liquid form. Our mother would give it to us with a teaspoon of sugar and put a couple of drops of Save the baby on it. Plus she rubbed our chest and backs with it. Nobody in our family died from ingesting it and I could use some now when bronchitis hits or the flu. The only reason you can't find it like you use to is because it was eating at the governments money because we was using those old folk remedies and they were working better than the doctors were. That's why you can't find many remedies because they don't want you to find them, because it might put them out of business.
Laura, I would be interested in buying the bottle from you if you have sold it already.
I have a Bottle of Lee's Save The Baby in the Original Box in Good Condition. The back label of the bottle is torn but still intact.a small piece of the front label is torn off very bottom right edge. Over all in good condition. Also has instruction sheet inside box in Great shape.
you can buy the stuff on ebay
i live in the capital region area- my husband's grandmother is the picture of the woman one the bottle- i would love to find an old bottle with the labe intact- let me know if anyone can help!!
Laureen-I am currently setting up a doctor's office in the town of North Creek. This is the town where Dr. William Lee practiced medicine for many many years eventually becoming the Town Health Officer. I know this is bold but any chance you would concider allowing us to display your bottle of "Save The Baby" in the exhibit that should run through the fall at which time it will be returned to you.
My mom, who lived in ME recently passed away and I found an old bottle of Lee's Save the Baby in her medicine cabinet. It sure did bring back memories. We never took it orally. She just heated up the bottle in a pan of hot water and rubbed a little on our nose, forehead and chest. My grandson has a bad cold now and I told my daughter to go ahead and use it. It can't possibly expire, can it?
My kids giggled as they heard me yelling in delight over your post. For years I told them about how my mother gave us Save the Baby and would have us eat a gob of Vicks rolled in sugar whenever we got congested. They thought I was nuts, but by golly it worked!!!
The product you speak of do work. I use it with both of my children and sometimes myself. Although it is not quite the same as what was used on us as children ourselves. That was a liquid version which I think was more effective, but this ointment works well
No, it is not the same at all. I'm so disappointed. We bought a blue bottle without the "Krause" label 20 years ago and it worked well even though it was not like the original glass bottle formula. This "Krause" version smells different and isn't as soothing to breathe in. Also leaves a rash on my toddlers. Not good.
I have an ear ache and the only thing that ever helped was to put Save The Baby on a piece of cotton and put it in your ear -- the warmth and the smell was so comforting! My mom never gave it to us orally - she used it as a rub (chest and across the nose for the stuffed nasal passages) and for ear aches. I really would like to be able to have some of this NOW!
The adirondack museum did a big research project on balsam, and they even made balsam salve from directions given by an old-timer. this museum is about 50 miles from Dr. Lee/s.

Thank you all for your responses and information. I knew I wasn't the only one that knew how good that medicine was or what happened to it. Daisy- Thanks for letting me know where I could find more information. No other real info showed up on Google or anything and I was out of ideas as to where to look. Cindy - Thank you for the ingredient list. I may try to figure out how to combine these somehow. Thanks!
