I agree that your body will become dependent upon it both psychologically & physically. It has changed your brain chemistry, & now will need quite some time to adjust. I have heard of people having seizures, & some pretty nasty withdrawals, especially electric zaps all over & severe insomnia. I tried cutting a 50 mg.pill down by 1/4, & got severe heart racing, irregular rhythms, & pounding, plus body zaps all over. I will go much slower next try.
The reason I want to go off them is because I recently learned that they can cause tardives dyskinesia & other dystonia & movement disorders. That scares me terribly! I asked more than one pharmacist what the odds were of developing it & they said less than 1%.They all had differing opinion on what that means exactly...one said less than 1 in 100, others said much less than that...maybe 1 in 1,000 or 1 in 10,000, so
It isn't as common as getting it from neuroleptic antipyschotic drugs, but trazadone & some SSRIs & Vistaril can cause these horrible, often irreversible effects. Now that I know that I can't stop worrying about it, so will try to slowly taper off, even though it helps me to sleep very much.I have been on them for 3 years at 50 mg. at bedtime for insomnia.
i am coming off trazadone. i am fatigued all the time and I sleep better than ever. [i under stand i should have insomnia but i don'] I am nauseous, some anxiety foggy, light headedness. I am weaning myself off the trazadone gradually. 100mg. 50mg.371/2mg 25m 121/2 for 4 weeks. I am very sensitive psy medinines
Trazodone is an SARI class antidepressant, that as was stated, is also sometimes used to treat insomnia.
And it is not habit forming in the concept that it is addictive, however, your body does get dependent on any substance that you ingest regularly, from your morning coffee to a medication and, if you stop taking it suddenly, you can experience some withdrawal effects, because your body does have to readjust to not having it, anymore.
In the case of antidepressants, such as this one, it can cause a few miserable weeks, where you might feel slightly depressed, irritable and you may experience more insomnia.

Are there any other questions or comments?
No, it is not habit forming. It is NOT a controlled substance. Often it is used off-label as a sleep aid when doctors, for some reason or another dont want to prescribe a controlled substance. It is not a sleep medication. It is a mood elevator. Good Luck.
