Taking Subutex And Percocet Together (Page 18) (Top voted first)
UpdatedMy doctor just put me on subutex along with percocet. I've been on percocet for yrs for severe and chronic migraines. He told me to take the subutex and if it doesn't work to take a percocet. I usually take 15 mg percocet at a time. I've read some stuff online that worries me. Some people say if you take percs with subutex you'll go into withdrawals. I went through severe withdrawals with fioricet months ago and I don't want to go through that hell again. I took my first subutex about an hour ago and I still have a migraine so I want to take a perc now. Can I do that or will I get sick?
First of all I don't know of any Dr that would give their patient pain meds and sub together. That's strictly a no no. It's one or the other. Sub is to help ease withdrawal symptoms when you must suddenly stop taking pain meds. I've been taking both off and on since sub first came out. I have taken a sub, 1/4 mg in the morning, then later a pain pill. You will get no effects from the pain meds as the sub blocks it. On the other hand, if you first take a pain pill, then sub, that's a whole different story. It used to work for me but hasn't in the past couple months. Going to discuss this with my Dr. on Mon. 6-13-16...I kept going back and forth hoping to not need pain meds, but each time I would try and wean off, my pain was still so bad that I'd need pain meds, again! I hate this vicious cycle I've gotten myself into. What I want to hopefully do is get off the sub as I'm eventually going to have a knee replacement. But, like I mentioned, I could take up to 70 mg of oxycodone and get nothing! This is the first time this has happened. I've never taken that much in one day. This just recently started happening. So, what's a person to do other than allow myself to go through awful withdrawals by not taking any sub for at least 72 hours, or more. That's scary. Sorry for making this so long. Thanks for reading
Hi, I was confused about this too. I've been on subutex, suboxone and pain meds off and on now for years. Up until a couple months ago I used to be able to take a pain pill first, then either a suboxone or subutex, this would help the pain meds to last longer, now I get nothing. I've not taken high doses of either. I'm just wondering why all of a sudden no pain meds work? My normal dose of sub is 1/4 in the morning and 1/4 in afternoon. That lasts me all day. The sub is made to block the receptors from letting the narcotic affect you. If at first one takes a pain pill then a sub, it's ok. The other way around and one gets nothing from the narcotic. I get nothing at all now! I too thought the naloxone was meant for opioid users, so that they couldn't administer it intravenously...No idea what's going on but I can't get pain meds to work at all! A month ago I have to take 2 20's of oxy at a time every 4 hours. That's absurd for me.
Wow, sorry about that. This has never happened to me which has me very puzzled. I take only 1/4 sub twice a day. If I take a pain pill, I get no effect from it.
DEB: Yes, they should definitely only have you on one or the other, not both. Let us know how it goes with the doctor, I am curious to know what he/she said. My friend who is an MD and an addiction specialist, he just shakes his head when I tell him what some of these doctors do. I told him about the "taking percocet and Subs together" thing, and he was completely floored.
And no, my post about being a "whining sniveling baby" was to this "REALLY" person, not at all to you. When you click "reply" to someone on here, it doesn't actually address WHO you are replying to. That's why I always put the name of the person in my reply.
Good morning, it's not the same Dr giving me both. I've gone back and forth trying to stay off pain meds but each time I can't stand the chronic pain, so back on sub. It's such a vicious cycle I've gotten myself into. Dr's tell me one or the other...I have chronic back pain and need a knee replacement. This morning I'm not taking any sub, only pain meds. I can't stand the pain any longer. I see pain management dr this fri.
Right, no problems with your attitude at all. ????
The sub cancels out the opiate! So if you take it, it will not help you. If you need the meds for pain, it will be like taking nothing at all. I was on subs for 5 yrs.
KKK: Hi there, I stopped the sub and back on pain meds. They are working now! So relieved as I've had chronic pain for yrs, acute for a yr. So tired of going back and forth as I know it's not a good thing. Thanks for your input!
Please don't try to cold turkey any NARCOTIC, by yourself, or alone. And subs are NARCOTIC, and even though lowest dose possible may have minimal effects, try to have someone present, until your past the sickness that makes you desperately crazy, that the chronic pain that took you to where you were before. In Florida, since government guidelines went into effect, I've lost over 20 friends to illicit drug addiction, and or alcohol addiction, and death. Way to go DEA, you sure increased black market, and population control. Just saying.
That's really hard to believe.. Subutex has no naxolone in it so why would you be sick?? No way
KKH: Hi there, not sure if I responded to your message. Being new to this site, I might have to get used to it. I see the pain management doc tomorrow. I couldn't be happier as she is one of the most thorough doctors I have ever been to. She actually gave me a physical. My primary has never even touched me with all the pain I have, I find that absurd! I did get some blood work done though and chest x-ray being I am a smoker. Ugh...Anyway, I just started painting in mid Jan and I love it! I have actually sold a watercolor painting just recently! Why am I telling you all of this? Well, just a little history of myself. I had never been able to find anything that interested me. I couldn't stay still long enough, all through my childhood and adult years. Now at 59 yrs old, my life is better than ever! I also suffer from chronic depression, which I take zoloft for. Ok, well I guess that's enough. Haha! Good day!
BUTCH: I don't care if you ARE a nurse. You are wrong. The only reason the Naloxone is in Suboxone, is to keep addicts from injecting it. Buprenorphine is a partial agonist, partial antagonist opioid. It has a HUGE binding affinity for opioid receptors, and will knock any and all full agonist opioids off of the mu-opioid receptors, throwing the patient into precipitated withdrawals. It is not the "Naloxone" that is "blocking" the opioids, it is the BUPRENORPHINE ITSELF. No offense, but I don't doubt that at a nurse, you do not know this. There are a few DOCTORS out there that don't know this. I went into FULL ON PRECIPITATED WITHDRAWALS from using Subutex too soon after full agonist opioids. I was never even on Suboxone, it was the Subutex, the one that has NO NALOXONE.
LIZ: Because it is the Buprenorphine itself, the active ingredient in Subutex and Suboxone, that is the actual "blocker", so to speak. The Buprenorphine will attach to your opioid receptors and completely saturate them, knocking any and all opioids off of said receptors, and throwing you into precipitated withdrawals. The Naloxone is in Suboxone to keep people from administering it intravenously. But it is the Bupe ITSELF that can "make you sick".
DEB: No problem, glad you got it all straightened out!
I have been on 24 mg of Subutex for 4 1/2 years now... Before I started taking it regularly, someone gave me one to try because I told her I was going to in withdraws from pain pills soon (30 mg roxy's).. I told her I hadn't had one simple the night before (about 12 to 14 hours) when really I had a quarter of a roxy that morning.. stupidest lie I've EVER told.. I thought I was going to die, literally! I was sick all day long..
Fast forward a little while and I started going to my first Sub clinic and taking subutex. I had (honestly) not had a pain pill in about 12 hours. The doctor was still worried about sending me into withdraws and only let me take a half of an 8 mg subutex at a time while I stayed in the clinic to be observed for a few hours. I finally finished the 3 subs and didn't get sick at all.. I did NOT however, change my behaviors because I thought the sub was supposed to be a "miracle drug" I guess and I started taking subutex in the mornings and Roxy 15's (up to 2 a day) in the evenings every day.. didn't get sick but didn't feel them either unless I took 2. Finally got a good counselor and changed my behaviors surrounding my addiction and was able to drop the pain pills completly after about the first 2 weeks at the clinic...
Fast forward a few years and I was in the hospital after giving birth to a child and in a lot of pain.. the first day I didn't take anything except my subutex. The second day I finally accepted their offer of a percocet because I couldn't handle it.. it worked great.. and I didn't get sick.. gave me energy too...
Fast forward a couple more years and I just had a miscarriage (still on 24 mg subutex) and have tried IR Oxycodone 5 mgs and Oxycontin 10's.. neither have helped at all...
I'm miserable.
So yes I think it may be that you have just been taking them so long now...
Btw: I know 2 people that are prescribed Subutex AND Roxy's AND one is also prescribed Xanax on top of those 2 things... so I didn't even realize it was that uncommon until reading these comments. When I first started taking subutex I thought you had to be off pain pills or coming off to get the subutex prescribed, but nope you dont.. hmm.. still sounds odd to me but that's just because I'm an addict and if I would have kept taking pain pills while I was trying to get treatment for my pain pill addiction, I would have stopped going to treatment altogether very shortly.
Best of luck to all!
MOMMY: Are these people being prescribed Roxys AND Subs by the same doctor? Because that is completely unscrupulous. Precipitated withdrawals aside, why would you even put someone on Subs when they are still taking pain pills? That just seems really WRONG.
JR1ZZLE: The only reason you are able to take the two together is because you are only taking 1 milligram of Subutex. One milligram wouldn't even TOUCH me when I was using Subs. Hell, TEN milligrams wouldn't touch me. When I went into Precipitated Withdrawals, it was from taking 16 mg of Subutex too soon after taking opioids. One milligram is certainly nowhere near enough to thoroughly coat your receptors if you are already a using opioid addict. I have never even heard of anyone being on such a low dose of Subs. I am wondering why you would even take Subs along with pain killers. What's the point? Are you trying to PURPOSELY not feel the Painkillers? I really am curious.
I've taken subutex and roxicodone 30 mg together everyday for the past year. I did not experience side effects or withdrawal feelings whatsoever.
I'm been on percets for year, taking six a day. The doctor will not give me more cause he feels I'm becoming addicted so he decided to give me 2mg of suboxone with my percocets. So I take my suboxone first then an hour later take my perc. Well I be at work spinning guts ripping apart feeling like s***ting my pants. Well I'm feeling like hurling. Fun part is the percocets are cheaper and they work with my system but I really believe it's all a money game, The doctors said after two weeks we will take u off the suboxone but we can't increase your perc cause you will become addicted. That's funny, I've been on it for two years. Hell, no way I could be hooked, but ya cheapest pill ever. 42 perc costs 17 dollars and 4 2mg suboxone costs 20. Why the ***k is the narcotic cheaper than the fix to get off the ***ing white devil? I told doc I want a surgery on my back and pretty much said when you start s***ting your pants and pissing yourself then we will do a surgery. It's a ***ed up world.
Why would up even post that on this forum? Smh...u do realize this is a drug forum and not one about painting or hobbies...
