Seroquel And Weight Gain (Page 3)
UpdatedIs anyone else experiencing weight gain from seroquel? I still work out the same as always, and eat the same way, but I have gained over 20 pounds since i started seroquel 2 months ago. I dont want to stop taking it becasue i finally found a drug that helps, but this is an unacceptable side effect to me, anyone have any tips for dealing with this?
I too have gained weight on Seroquel (150 mg). I have always weighed in the low 120s, but I am now weighing 132-133. I am eating healthy and work out 5 days a week, but no matter what I do I cannot lose more than 1/2 lb. which I gain right back. I think I can maintain my current weight, but it worries me that if I start eating just a little more the weight will pile on!
I have just switched to abilify for the past 3 weeks and already I can feel a difference, so maybe worth looking into this? Take care and thanks for feedback.
I am taking 25 mg of Seroquel for sleep and PMDD. It works great......however I notice I am gaining weight. I am 40 years old and weigh 115. I work out 6 days a week and eat extremely clean (no sugar, and no carbs) my diet consists of lean protein, vegs, anf fruits and lots of water. This sucks!!!
Metformin is suppose to prevent weight gain from the medication but it does not reverse weight you have already gained.
I have b een taking 300 mg of seraquil and I have put on ten pounds of belly fat. I have also noticed that I have been craving sweets!! Im looking for a medicine that works the same but without the weight gain.
I have suffered from bipolar and severe depression for about 25 years. During the early years of my diagnosis I was prescribed many varied cocktails of meds that either had little effect or caused me problems as I have many drug allergies. I am 5'5" tall and my weight for 40 years of my adult life was about 110 lbs. When Zyprexa first came on the market my Dr. decided to try it out and I was then on it for 3-4years. During the first year I was on Zyprexa I gained over 150 lbs and became a brittle insulin dependent diabetic who had little to no improvement in bipolar and suicidal depression symptoms. Finally the research into this new med Zyprexa indicated it could cause severe diabetes in some patients so it was discontinued and my diabetes immediately went away completely. I was then started on Seroquel and within months my bipolar and depression was nearly gone and remains gone to this day, nearly 10 years later. But, the binge eating mentioned was also an immediate and ongoing problem. When I took my pills at bedtime (300- 600mg over the years as the Dr adjusted my dosage), I found that within minutes of taking Seroquel I did not have a shovel big enough to fill the voracious hunger I felt. After stopping Zyprexa I was able to lose 90-100 lbs. by following a rigorous exercise routine and very small healthy portions during the day. Unfortunately on the Seroquel I can gain lots of weight at the drop of a hat; sometimes as much as 20 lbs. in a few days and I also need to take Lasix on an as needed basis for the fluid retention. Is it worth it? In my case, the Seroquel along with Trazadone has given me my life back free from the relentless, debilitating symptoms of bipolar and suicidal depression that plagued me every waking minute of every day for years. Would I like to be thin again...definitely, but I would not trade my peace of mind for a smaller dress size. If anyone has any tips for handling the binge eating I would appreciate it because as a senior citizen I am becoming less able to engage in the amount of exercise needed to just maintain my weight. It is my feeling, after decades of trial and error, that if you find medications that actually work for you, whether it is Seroquel or some other med or combination you should stick with it unless the risks outweigh the benefits.
I started taking Seroquel 6 years ago for anxiety. It was prescribed for me at the Mayo Clinic. I am a female, 5'10" and have always weighed 150 lb. as an adult. I have gained 47 lb. during the last 6 years and NOTHING has changed in my diet. I exercise and eat light meals.
i have been on seroquel for about 2 months and have put on 5 kgs i exercise regulary i see m to be putting it on really fast they do help me but if this continues i will have to stop taking them and find some thing else
i was on 600mg of this drug forover 6 months and gained at least 30 pounds i got a new phsyc and he said as long as your on it YOU'LL KEEP GAINING weight so he starteded to reduce my dosage in hopes to put me on somthing else.
I have been taking Seroquel for about a year. I have lost at least 25 lbs and continue to loose. My previous meds made me gain weight. I only take 25mg at night. What I have found is that Seroquel takes over your body! It has made me more susceptible to loose stools. It has also interacted with a lot of my other medications. I have reduced some of them a little at a time and found improvement in my life. Overall I like Seroquel. The one thing I don't like is that it gives me a negative attitude a lot. But if you're gaining weight, I would look at all the meds you are taking ... maybe there is an interaction you don't know. I have found Seroquel to interact with more of my meds than any other medication I have taken.
I am on Seroquel since 2008. After a lot of changes in my medicine (I am Bipolar), my correct balance of medication has now been found. I take 400 mg of Seroquel at night with 300mg of Venlor and 200mg of Epilem. In the morning I take 200mg of Epilim and 300 mg of Epitec. I did not believe the story about the weight gain, but it is now getting out of hand. I gained about 30kg! And no matter how hard I try I can't loose weight
I've been on 400mg of Seroquel at bedtime for about 4 years. It does make me crave sweets about 20 mins after I take it, but I try to eat a bowl of oatmeal with sweetener instead of the bag of cookies I want. Mostly it has just made it harder for me to lose weight, but guess what? They make a pill for that too. I started taking phendimitraz about 8 months ago, 2 pills 3x daily. I can actually take 1 with seroquel and it gets rid of my munchies and I still get a great night's sleep. End result, I have lost 45 pounds. And they are safe to take together. Just saying. If you have wicked insomnia, Seroquel is prolly part of your life. Go to your local Shapers and they will hook you up. I have had no side effects from taking them together, aside from finally being able to lose weight.
Ive been on seroquel for a little over 4 years I was on 100mg. I thought it was fine. But presently I couldn't sleep.so I went up yo 200mg. I have been on that dowager for 2 months.ive been having the same pronouns.cant sleep still.j gained about 25 lbs.n when I take it it don't make me drozy, it makes me really hungry and I usely dont have an apatite.but I font now why.
I'm on 25mg since my Dad took his own life three years ago, I have always been skinny and have put on 8kg, have not changed my diet, if anything eat less but don't know how to sleep without it! I have never had a psychiatric problem but dealt with terrible trauma, I know weight gain is not the end of the world but I don't feel like the same person
I have been on Seroquel for about 6 months and i am definitely gaining weight in a very slow sneaky way that I hardly even notice, until today when I went shopping for pants. I have gone from a size 12 to 14, I cursed out my shrink in the changing room. I really like this drug for it helps me fall asleep really easily, also my intrusive thoughts are minimized to the point where I can now function better. I am still depressed though and remain extremely reclusive. Today for the first time I am thinking of cutting out the seroquel completely because of the weight gain, that is a side effect that is totally unacceptable to me and I actually find it devastating. Please, if anyone has any advice, it would be truly appreciated.
Dear Catherine,
I live with Bi-Polar Disorder along with quite a few Auto-immune diseases. I realise you're probably ready to snap at this point,,,,I was given an Rx for Seroquel in 2007. WONDERFUL results. However, the results were ONLY with mood and better sleep. The HORRIBLE results were an enormous weight gain; I gained somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 pounds!!!! I'd NEVER been so heavy in my life....I noticed my ankles and calves were swelling and was experiencing heart palpitations. I saw an ad-locum M.D. one who only comes to our hospital occassionally. He tested my Thyroid. Quite the different M.D. this man actually phoned my house personally; Not his nurse. HE phoned. My Thyroid was barely functioning. He told me Seroquel is a drug which the negative effects far outweigh the good. In short, he told me to stop or I might die....Please, these A-Typical Anti-Psychotics, like Seroquel, Zyprexa et al can be BAD. Google "Defective Drug List" and you'll find, both are listed. Not good. Personally? I don't believe they should be Rx'd I do know a few people who take one or the other and they seem to work well with little negative side effects. I wish you the best ~ Di
Hi,I am very lean so I wish to add weight fast within 1month. Can seroquel be of help? I also wish to know if it has effect on brain
Ben,
PLEASE read my comment below yours; #56,,,,This Rx Med. most definitely affects the brain as it's an A-Typical Anti-Psychotic over-prescribed imo. Usually, Rx'd for mood stabilisation and/or sleep induction. If you do NOT have need for psychiatric meds. do not go there.... ~ Di
oh my God i've gone up to 209 pounds from 175/i've narrowed it down to serequel as the culprit/i'm starting abilify and trying to taper off serequel..it is a crappy drug.
Being previously very light (110 lb) I thought the weight gain (now 135 lb) would be a silver lining to the circumstances that made me start seroquel.. Unfortunately the type of weight you put on isn't pleasant. It's going to be the nastiest fattiest looking weight. Look for another way.
