Pain Ptsd And Opiate Treatment

I have herniated discs in my neck and a traumatic brain injury resulting from combat exposure.
I am prescribed and have [for almost 2 years] taken 30 mg of MS Contin 3 times a day for neck pain. Due to reasons too numerous to list I do get headaches which result in sleep loss and incapacitation due to the severity of pain.
At first my Dr would prescribe Percocet for the head aches which take a pattern of 3-4 head aches every week for about 3 months of the year. Then he prescribed Morphine IR 30 mg prn before he decided that although the short acting opiates work for the pain and allow me to function through a head ache, prescribing them to me was hazardous (for head aches) and he believed I was "self-medicating" to deal with stress.
* to the Dr.'s credit I do suffer from psychological problems related to combat trauma and the head aches appear around the same time of year as "the stressful events" also occurred. However, the only noteworthy increase in stress is related to receiving adequate pain management for my head aches.
Is my doctor a hypocrite for prescribing the long acting morphine year round but denying me short acting pain medication a few months of the year?
Is it common for people to have traumatic anniversaries? And, is it common for pain to accompany those emotionally or psychological problems?

It is actually very common for pain to accompany psychological problems. That is why many of the ads you see that encourage people to get treatment for depression mention the pain they may feel. The chemical imbalance in the brain that causes these problems can affect way more than just your mood, stress levels and anxiety. Many of these chemicals also affect how sensitive you are to pain, so even if they don't have any injury that provides a reason for it, people with psychological problems can experience pain throughout their body or, as in your case, they may experience severe headaches.

As to being a hypocrite, no, your doctor does have a valid concern. He wants to help you, but not turn you into an addict.

Have you tried any other medications for the headaches, that aren't narcotics?
