My Doc Will Not Refill My Xanax Im Feeling Sick (Page 9) (Top voted first)

I was prescribed Prozac & Xanax 10 years ago by my psychiatrist for depression & severe panic attacks. He started me on 1mg 3 times a day. Around Dec 2005 he increased my daily dose to 1 mg - 4 times a day. I have been a patient of his now for 10 years where I see him every 3 months. Through the years, there has been a few times were I had to call to reschedule my appointment and a couple of times he had to do the same. He would call in my meds for the amount I would need to get me through to my next appointment. This month I had an appointment for May 27th I called to reschedule due to transportation. I do not drive now and my ride canceled on me. so, I rescheduled my app. for June 17th I then requested my meds be called in until my appointment, a 3 week supply. She said she would call me back when it was called in later that day. Not hearing anything I called back the next day to find out what was going on. I was told my doctor feels uncomfortable due to liability reasons to re-fill my medication, until I see him again in June. I asked her what about the liability to take me off medication I have been taking for 10 years? She told me to go to my primary physician to get my meds. I told her my primary care doctor will not prescribe me those medications without my medical records from this office and I just signed a medical release form a few days ago at my first appointment with this new primary doctor, so she told me to go to an urgent care if my symptoms became to uncomfortable for me to deal with!! I had enough xanax to last me until today. I took my last xanax this morning and I am already starting to feel sick, my head feels cloudy, I feel like I'm getting the flu. My heart is racing, I'm feel really anxious & closed in. Has anyone out there gone off xanax cold turkey what more should I expect? I don't understand how a doctor can prescribe medication like this for 10 years and just make you stop so suddenly it doesn't seem fair. I have lost trust in my doctor now and I don't think I can continue to be his patient anymore. I am scared and I don't know who to turn too.

Great advice Chris! I wound up almost dying from a CT withdraw, and was able to secure the services of the Doctor treating me in the Hospital during my one-week stay in 2010. Billy (post 22) wrote here in 2012 there is a special law that the Doctor must continue treating you with Xanax. He was very wrong, millions have lost access to Xanax. I find it easier getting Xanax from my Doctor than I do for eye drops. I asked if I could try those new drops that help you see up close, they sound fascinating. He said no

I agree stopping this med with out a backwoard titration or taper is very dangerous it can cause severe dipression and withdrawls along with suicidal tendancies. Your Dr is walking on a knifes edge ever though i see his point it is very dangerous if need be find a wait lose/pain management hole in the wall i believe u pay 40 cash for a visit tell him or her whats wrong and they write u scripts no Q;s asked my friend does this i have a PM doc good luck go the ER or call your original doc and tell whats happening someone will see the red flag and help you good luck God Bless Merry X-mas and a Happy New Year

I have been taking .25 mg of xannax for 7 mos.now. eeafch refill comes w/2 more rifills. My last Dr visit he refilled my meds only for me 2 discover when i picked it up at pharmacy the peresc only had 1 refill on it. when I ren out I orederd a new pres. and it was refilled w/"no refills" Why would the Dr change refills w/o telling me in our office visit?

i have been on 4 mg of xanex a day for about 2 yrs with that low of a dosage if i come off of them cold turkey will i still expierience the withdrawl symptons like seziures and high blood presure

I've been on 1mg Xanax twice a day for panic attacks and recently moved to the Orlando , FL area from SC. Now no Dr down here will prescribe my medication and I'm in pure hell in a place where I don't know anyone. How can professional Drs do this to people? I tried Buspsar and it did nothing. Pls help!

Dawn might be Gone, but always be careful with Alprazolam on the way out. Cold Turkey is tough!

im planning on takinx xanax the rest of my life ,going off it is too ugly.been on and off for 15 yrs averging 2 mg a day .i know it will burn out my liver kidney function eventually but i already have brain damage from it and i suffer other terminal diseases wich will probably result in death within a few yrs .i wont do anti depressants anti manics or even tylenol or ibuprofen. its actually worse.morphine was easier to stop then benzos ! again i will just take it for life ;maybe hav 5 yrs left or so.

its also safer than alchohol but similiar [xanax] i really need 3-6 mg a day but on two.
my doc is hesitant to up dose because he knows ... i respect that but just let me have the stuff till im dead .WTF
how common is death with xanax if not abused? and how long?
i would rather take xanax than lithium or depakote too[fare more toxic]

okay, if you want to stretch out ur xanax supply just eat or drink pure grapefruit! 1 mg with gfruit equals about efeects of 3 mg! u didnt hear this from me.

in 55 years old and stopped ALCHOHOL WHEN I WAS 25. it scares me to think of resorting to this as a last resort BUT if you are dependendant on benzos or barbituates and run out cold turkey YOUR GONNA HAVE SERIOUS PROBLEMS . side effects COUD BE HEART ATTACK DEATH OR STROKE! ALCHOHOL will keep you alive a little longer and prevent seizures but its nothing but trouble also even though LEGAL im still shaking all day long and can not taper down or off completely.
at least im not on crank crack or junk disability sucks! MEDICAL MARIJUANA IS A POSSIBILITY OF GETTING OFF XANAX 4 EVER but requires pretty high doses]expensive and only quasi legal ... wow LIFE,

Jennifer, I'm not sure you should report him. He's done a lot more than most other doctors would do as it is. Doctors are NOT accommodating when it comes to our needs, we have to meet THEM where THEY are. And something VERY important here - do NOT go into withdrawals over 5 pills! Xanax is CHEAP!!! I can buy 90 1 mg xanax for about $15-20! Unless you are flat broke, I would just pay for it out of pocket, then let insurance pick up the next, larger script. If you keep pushing your doctor, he's going to be wanting to get rid of you as a patient real quick & in a hurry, if he doesn't already. But PLEASE - just go buy those 5 pills out of pocket so you won't withdraw! It's not worth it just for your own comfort and well-being for now. I hope I've helped :) And good luck working this out the way it needs to be!

Thank you for your response. I finally got in touch with him today. The thing is- I had scheduled an appt with him and while we were setting it up I told him I was in the process of getting a new job and don't know my hours yet so I may have to reschedule. He was perfectly fine with that. After I learned my schedule I called to set up an appt with him and he said he was booked out for at least a month and a half then he wouldn't refill my script again. He said if I needed to reschedule that he'd fit me in due to the circumstances of my new job. Anyway, I finally talk to him today, told him about my seizure and what does he say in response? "Please, I highly doubt that...I don't believe you." And so on and so on. I am just disappointed in the way he's handled this whole situation. Needless to say he will no longer be my psychiatrist. I'm still going to report him to my insurance company who he's contracted with. He's very rude as a psychiatrist anyway. He's constantly bringing up how I'm young and so beautiful so it probably effects relationships such as friends and colleagues etc. crossed the line one too many times.

I don't blame you then! I knew he sounded like a naysayer, but he really is! Some are just difficult! Good luck with that, and hope you find a much better psychiatrist next time!

Honestly although withdrawing from Xanax can kill you Char I would not worry about any problems with the dose you are taking. I would continue to take half a .25 for a few weeks. You should be fine. This advice does NOT apply for higher doses. Good luck!

Be very careful. Stopping Xanax can cause severe gran mal seizures. Don't drive. It can take quite awhile for this to get out of your system. This happened to me, and I did end up with gran mal seizures and after 20 years still have an occasional petit mal seizure. If this doctor really stopped your Xamax abruptly, I would definately seek a lawyer. You'll be ok without it though. Just try and relax. Let God have your problems.

I am sorry to hear about what is happening to you, but as the other person on the blog wrote, if you can make it to you pharmacy then yu can go see him and cancelling isn't good at all you need to call them back cuz you will for sire have a seizure I am medical and it happened to me you need to remind them that you will have a seizure I had one in the middle of Fred Meyer and almost died that is illegal what he is doing, but you cant cancel all the time take a bus what ever. I would get help soon because I don't want to scare you but it is serious

I would without hesitation, tell this doctor to go straight to hell. Tell him that what he is saying is NOT ACCEPTABLE to you. I would report him immediately. For God's sake, don't let this man play a "God" role. No doctor will ever push me around again. Take this seriously. What you want is a good thing. Take your control back. If nothing else, find out who his insurance carrier is, and tell them.

mj that might be all well and good, but don't you play doctor either. You can't categorize people. You don't know this person, and don't know anything about their problems. Xanax is not OK either.
