Methadone Stopped My Periods (Page 9) (Top voted first)
UpdatedCan any of the women out there tell me if taking methadone stopped thier periods? I have been on methadone for 4 years now and as soon as I went over 35mg it completely stopped and It has not come back since. I am on 60mg now. I did get lowered to 30 mg at one time years ago and it started right up again. Does anyone know if this might be dangerous? I have asked my doctor at the meth clinic and she stated its nothing to be concerned about because I wanted to know if I should be taking something to make it start and she said no, but for some reason it seems that it just does not sound good for a natural process to stop like that and not have it do any harm. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Ladies, I'm back after about 6-8 months. I have been on 70 mg for a year-and-a-half now and when I started I didn't get my period for 7 months. And when I finally dit it waz sooo it was very light and 2-3 days. (Which I've never experienced in my life until then) I have suffered so much with me reproductive system with very early stage 1a1 cervical cancer and heavy periods that lasted weeks, (one time a year and a half STRAIGHT) needless to say I have been happy with not getting my period. But I cannot help but worry, because as we all know this is when our reproductive system naturally cleans itself. So I have had my period twice after the first time and both very light. I'm glad I'm not the only one!
Re: Jennifer (# 4)
It is completely normal to not have your periods with any daily usage of opiates. You would be harder pressed to find someone who is having their cycle on opiates. With that being said, you may still be ovulating, as I am likev clockwork

Hi Sylvia,
As soon as I started methadone my periods completely stopped. In 4 years I've had 3 periods in 4 years. My periods were like clock work before methadone. I don't know if I'm ovulating and not having a period. I have a IUD put in because I don't want to get pregnant. I'm 34 by the way. My friend also had the same thing happen when she got on methadone.
I have been taking methadone for 4 years now, and in the last 2 years, I have only had 2 periods. I am very concerned about this as well, and my doctor can check things out, but without insurance, I already pay enough for my pain management with fibromyalgia a month. I am on 60mgs a day and have been for the last 2 years
I am on a dose of 105 mills down from 150 I started on the program 3 years ago. I didn't have a period for years until I actually went on methadone. I am TTC now my husband is not on methadone but takes 6-8 codeine tabs a day. Is there anyone who has had great trouble conceiving after years of heroin and pain pill addiction. I started on heroin at 14 got off it when I was 16 and then from 19 till 26 started taking copious amounts of codeine so much that I had to go onto methadone. I am not a bad person, I was always a high functioning addict I have a great education and I know I will make a great mum.
It is dangerous to not have a period for months or even years no one is going to convince me that going without your period will not harm you because I know it will stir up something in your body that could maybe lead to a cancer
When I was 18 years old and went to the clinic I was at 50mg and my period stopped- I got out of the clinic at 19 which was awful but awesome. I ended up back in the clinic at age 25 this time my dose was 111 and my period never stopped (meaning I was regular). Now I am at 32 mg It's not easy I have been at the clinic 4 years this time- guess I have a good memory of the pain from when I quit the clinic when I was 19. I am 29 yrs old now and I go down 1 mg every Friday. I want my life back, or should I say I want a new better life. I agree with you it cant be healthy to not have a period it cleanses your body. I wanted to tell you that methadone for a long time isn't good. I use to only drink water and after a while at the clinic I began to drink only Sprite not to mention It hard to wake up and keep awake. Methadone is great but not something to take for the rest of your life because it causes a lot of negative lifestyle changes. Too much sugar will make you sick. Good luck to you and God bless you and heal you on your journey. :-)
I was taking oxys, percs, hydromorph contin, dilaudids for 2 years, then switched over to methadone 7 months ago and I havent had a period since I started the methadone. Before that my periods have been very regular my whole life. My Dr said there was nothing related to birth control in the methadone and offered no explanation as to why this happens but another girl i know had major changes in her periods too, like light to no periods. Its definitely from methadone but im not worried about it. im 35 and have 3 kids and tried oxys with my third which was an emerg c section and then hot hooked. but im at 170mg now and will start going down very slowly soon.
Hi Silvia,
I was on 100mg of methadone a day for several years as part of my pain management therapy. I didn't have any problems with my period at all. I'm in my 40's and before my hysterectomy I was bleeding for months on end. I actually bleed for 8 months straight. I would have a day or two where it would stop, but then it would start and seemed endless. I don't know your age, but if it isn't a sign of medical problems..be glad!
Any negativity? Methadone is chemical handcuffs. You can be as proactive as you want; the clinic doctors WILL tell you, basically, to go pound sand. Methadone, created in nazi Germany and originally named after Adolph Hitler, is an evil drug and a lucrative business. While not all my health problems are from methadone, they came self induced and I will be the first to admit that - Methadone is about as evil as they come in drug speak.
No one is attacking your recovery. My palliative care is my choice as well. You don't know me well enough to say I am being ignorant. I don't know you well enough to say you are ignorant, either. Before making assumptions consider all possibilities.
The Hitler comments? Only the truth. Methadone has both good and evil to it, and many shades of grey between. I honestly do wish the best to anyone on MTT... I just wish there was more information available so that when people do experience such side effects (as per the original post) they would know what to do.
Methadone tapering should be done as slowly as possible. 1ml a week or less. Even then, the withdrawal is likened to the worst flu, tenfold. It is known to mess up your menstrual cycle and it is possible to be allergic to it. 1 in 100 are. That said, I am not telling anyone how to live their life or manage their recovery. That is up to you and your doctors. However more information leads to less ignorance.
I am suffering from a debilitating and deadly disease, that I know now. I am also withdrawaling from methadone at the same time. Think before you speak.
