I Just Found Out The Fda Pulled Asthmanefrin Off The Shelves (Page 3) (Top voted first)

Updated

I've been sitting here crying because the pharmacist just told me that AsthmaNefrin was taken off the market. I look on the internet and it's been recalled by the FDA because it has caused chest pain and has many complaints. This decision by the FDA will kill people like me because I get a paradoxical reaction to Albuterol and Levalbuterol. They work completely different. Different drug. If I go to the emergency because I can't breathe, they save me with ephinephrine, the same drug that AsthmaNefrin is. And look in any drug book, Albuterol and Levalbuterol has worse side-effects than Epinephrine. I have to have my rescue inhaler with me everyday. The Primatene tablets are horrible, causing extreme anxiety and don't mix with my antidepressant. I was on cortisone for years and now I can't tolerante at all. I've stayed healthy and my lungs are good using Singulair and AsthaNefrin. Singulair can't stop an asthma attack. This is really going to ruin my life! What am I going to do?

Thank you Mac! I can't believe Asthmanefrin just disappeared without warning and I can't get Nephron to answer or call me back. My husband ordered me some and I just got it but then what? I read that the Abuterol HFA canisters are faulty, releasing a huge amount of preservative and giving people asthma. I am going to try Albuterol in a nebulizer to see what happens. Albuterol in the canister gives me asthma. Meanwhile, Primatene Mist is getting ready for the FDA approval again this year for their HFA canister. According to Walgreen's, it won't happen. I hope they are wrong. I read that Asthmanefrin needs to get approved before they can sell their product. I hope you will be OK. I will keep you posted when I find out more about Asthmanefrin.

Nephron's been moving its production from Florida to a new facility in South Carolina, so there'll probably continue to be scarcity of Asthmanefrin refills for a time.

Hello! I have some news for you that might be very good - if you go to ebay and search for asthmanefrin, it appears to be listed at the same price as cvs used to sell it. I just went to my local cvs to unfortunately find all of the refills in store were gone, and looked online to learn of the recall. i hope this helps! it seriously depresses me to see all the problems these various recalls and bans have caused asthma sufferers.

Buy it from Walmart, they probably took it off the shelves because it actually worked.

Hi Saphrona,

I conversed with you as one of the "Anonymous's" on Dr. Mintz's site. :-) The familyotc website still has AsthmaNefrin refills available. They are higher than Wal-Mart but at least they still have some. One box of refills is $36 and 4 boxes are $140. Hope this helps you dear! By the way, I ordered one box and it arrived in a few days.

Thank you so much, Paul! I will check it out!! I will keep you informed about the prescription possibility in case Asthmanefrin becomes obsolete like Primatene Mist did. I have noticed that lots of people have written all over the internet, that Primatene Mist and Asthmanefrin work way better. Some people's quality of life is way worse without it. Who knows how many of us are out there struggling to breathe and suffering.

Sabrina, try again on Walmart's webpage. I just ordered one for my husband yesterday because it is the only thing that really helps him at this time. Walmart themselves didn't have it, but it had to be shipped to my house from one of their retailers. It was more expensive than Walmart advertised but free shipping and delivery in 3-7 business days.

Paul, Hi! Thank you for this information. You are right. It has not been discontinued. How weird and scary to not know what was going on for so long. But I'm so happy about it! I agree with you. All of this medicine costs way too much. It makes me furious that it's so hard to get a medicine like epinephrine, that has been around for over 100 years, that has saved MANY lives, including mine, just so you can breathe! WTH?. I went to my doctor, and he found some Racepinephrine, over the counter, but it was going to cost $120 a month at my pharmacy. I said, no thanks, I will get mine on the black market. Way too expensive. But to my surprise, I have been getting the Asthmanefrin as a prescription and my insurance is paying an out of network price of $25, which is saving me a lot of money! The pharmacy called me and told me they would be able to get me the Asthmanefrin and it was over-the-counter only and would cost $60 a month which ended up being $40. So when I went to pick it up, they said my insurance will help me pay for it. Never thought that would happen! So sorry you have to pay so much! Terrible! I am trying to get the word out about all of this. Take care and thanks again!!

I too am extremely upset that this product has been pulled. I have suffered from Asthma for years and do have a prescription for Combivent respimat. However, particularly during allergy season I rely on something extra to get me through the night and ibuterol, etc. makes my breathing issues worse. Asthmanefrin was perfect and exactly what I needed. I had no adverse effects after the first couple of uses and even purchased a nebulizer to use with the replacement vials since the unit that came with the original kit was not reliable. Is there or will there be a comparable replacement OTC counter any time soon?

This is an update to my reply: I found out recently that my insurance company isn't paying for almost half the cost of Asthmanefrin; it is actually Shopko Pharmacy. So, how cool is that? I am paying $25.00 for a box of 30, which lasts a month, a lot more affordable. I am very grateful. So now I am only paying 12 times what it cost to buy Primatene Mist. Woo hoo! :)

You can use any nebulizer with the Asthmanefrin solution, it doesn't have to be the one Nephron recommends. The only thing is with a lot of nebulizers you'll need to add a little water in with it because they won't get up a proper mist with just a small amount of fluid. You can even use those beauty mister things. I have one called Nano Mist, it cost around $15 from Amazon, but you can get them cheaper from other sites, sometimes even $5 a piece with free shipping, if you're willing to wait. I keep a few in case one fails me. As far as FDA approved nebulizers go, you can always pick those up from the Just-Nebulizers website. The Omrons are really good. I have one of those that I use at home, then I use the Nano Mist things when I'm out and about. You could also just get an old-fashioned bulb nebulizer. Just-Nebulizers always says you need a prescription, but just don't submit one with your order and they'll ship it out anyway. Or you can have your doctor fax one in if you have insurance that would help cover it. There's no law stating you need a prescription to get a nebulizer, companies just say that to try and scare away people who would use them for something other the FDA-approved uses. {affiliate link added}

Hi everyone. I still see an occasional box of AsthmaNefrin at my local WalMart for just under $27. Also, the asthmanefrin.com website seems to be back in operation. They sell it for $30 per box plus shipping. Unfortunately the cheapest shipping for 2 boxes was almost $14. They still do not have the atomizers. On a different note, there doesn't seem to be any news about a Primatene Mist replacement. Also, the promised EpiMist on the drnaturalhealing site is still just a promise. I tried their dry powder product. While it is better than nothing the dryness can cause one to cough upon inhalation, thus negating any benefit. :-( But cigarettes are still sold everywhere. :-O FDA, can you explain this idiocy?

I know there was a recall for the atomizers shortly after they came onto the market. The reason for the recall was the top plastic piece was cheap and broke easily. I called the company at the time and they promptly sent me a new atomizer which was better. I don't know if the recall is still in effect or if they would honor it since they don't seem to make them anymore. However, it wouldn't hurt to give them a call to ask. According to their website, their # is 1-855-999-3926. Good luck!

Re: RxStallion (# 75) Expand Referenced Message

The AsthmaNefrin starter kit is no longer available because the atomizer that came with the kit was very unreliable and clogged up often, rendering it useless. Apparently, the maker of AsthmaNefrin couldn't come up with an alternative. However, all is not lost. There are some similar types of units made by other companies that can be used. Search this thread for them. To me, AsthmaNefrin is the best alternative for Primatene Mist that is available, although it is somewhat inconvenient to use. I hope this helps your daughter.

Great news!! Amphastar, the maker of the discontinued Primatene Mist, says on their website that a reformulated Primatene Mist is coming on the market soon! If true this is incredible news. I have a zero co-pay for the albuterol prescription inhaler but would gladly pay out of pocket for Primatene Mist because it works so much better. Go to the new primatene.com website for more info. Wow, this is huge!!

To Mac: All is well. Still healthy and breathing. Sounds like you are too. That's great! I will try the Eucalyptus. Didn't know it also had antibacterial properties. I've been putting Frasier tree wax cubes in my wax burner and it opens my sinuses. Most of the strong smells will give me asthma but this helps. It's similar to the smell of pine. I got the idea after Christmas because I noticed the pine smell from the scented candle was helping me.

My wonderful atomizer is clogging up no matter what I do, so I will be using my little nebulizer again. It works great, just takes a lot more time. Glad you found one that works good. It does cost about $200 to get an atomizer over the internet. Ridiculous. I get my Asthmanefrin from Walgreens and recently they are selling a nebulizer very similar to the one I got over the internet. Finally! I love Walgreens now. Walmart tells me they have never heard of Asthmanefrin, like I am crazy.

Thanks for the info! Take Care!

Hi Paul, never heard of a powder epinephrine. Let us know how it worked. The Asthmanefrin works great for me but it's not portable, has a plug and you can't store the medicine in the nebulizer. So in the middle of the night, when I can't breathe, I have to put the whole thing together and then clean it after. Not fun when you can't breathe. It would be great if this powder worked!

HELP. I am trying to contact a "Toxicology professional"!

What will happen (Side effect's) if you put the "Asthmanefrin" medicine (the liquid) "Racepinephrine" directly on your skin?

How long would it take to work its way out of the body?

Any bad side effect's on my kidney's or liver?
