Fluoxetine Sinus Problems
(Newest replies first)

I have been on fluoxetine for eight months. I am on 40 mg/day. I've always been prone to sinus infections, but my sinus problems have gotten worse and now I have this pain in my sinuses everyday. I realized that I started having worse sinus issues around the same time I started taking fluoxetine - its even documented in my doctor's notes that I have been complaining of sinus pains and infections since about 7 months ago. She says it's a rare side effect so fluoxetine is probably not the culprit, but the sinus pain has gotten so bad that I'm willing to stop taking the meds (the other side effects like the nightmares are driving me nuts too). Anyway, has anyone else had sinus problems related to fluoxetine or Prozac?

there is herbal medicine in Polish pharmacy or on internet called Sinupret. Is excellent I used and is effective. You have finished 60 tablets to the end but I took slowly 1 tablet x3 a day.
Definitely not alone my sinuses are in agony and started immediately after taking the green yellow fluoxetine:(
Re: ML (# 5)
original post - started Prozac on May 3. Flu like symptoms for days 4, 5 and 6. Those went away.
However, I have had sinus issues and post nasal drip for the past 6 weeks. I'm convinced that it's the prozac.
It is now August 7, and I still have sinus issues. I guess I'll live with them until such time as I decide to wean off the prozac.

I have the same issues with my 40ml fluoxetine. I get a lot of headaches due to some sinus illnesses and I always have heartburn. Maybe I'll change my manufacturing co. Or just go to the green and white prozac capsules. And yes it sucks when you throw up and taste that capsule in your throat. Its nasty. Glad to know im not making up my symptoms. Cant be. It sounds like the generic caps are tainted. Going to switch brands next time this following month. Gotta go, real busy. Glad you feel better. Now at least I know there's hope. Happy fourth of july coming up. Thank you. You helped me a lot!?
Fluoxetine is a generic of Prozac and is made by different manufacturers. I have taken 20mg green/white caps with no prob, but the blue/green ones caused me sinus issues AND heartburn. I have never had heartburn before. I only realized that the capsules themselves may be the issue because of info on this site by other people. Like you, I have noticed sinus problems and even some tooth/sinus pain since taking the blue/green variety of fluoxetine. I was just switched to 40mg and threw up promptly while brushing my teeth. The 40mg capsule is blue/white with 115 SG written on it. DO NOT throw up after taking that cap!! Burned my throat like nothing ever has before!! It took a full day to recover, and I still have heartburn. I am having my doc prescribe two, 20mg/day by the TEVA manufacturer (green/white) since I took those for over a year with NO side effects. I hear that Prozac also comes in a tablet and a liquid. Prozac is a fine med provided you either take the brand formulation itself or find a generic formuation/supplier that doesn't cause you ill effects.
I just started on fluoxetine this past Monday (20mg/day). It immediately gave me a runny nose, but by Thursday evening I was running a fever 101.4F, had body aches, chills, and extreme sinus pain. I called the doc, who said it was probably coincidence that I got a sinus infection just after starting the fluoxetine, because it was a rare side effect. However, like the above poster said, the FDA includes it on the list of commons side effects. I have stopped the fluoxetine, but given the long half-life it will probably take a while to get better. I'm also now on antibiotics for the sinus infection. I rarely get sinus infections, so it's hard for me to discount the timing with taking fluoxetine.
Hello, Alaska! How are you?
Actually, they aren't that rare, rhinitis and other sinus issues have been known to occur in 10% or more of the people that take it.
Other side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and weight loss.
Is there anything else I can help with?
