Contrave - Restarting And Side Effects
(Newest replies first)

I've been taking Contrave for about 2 1/2 months. During week 6 or so I was hospitalized with a severe UTI and kidney infection (4 days). The hospital wouldn't give me Contrave during my stay but I resumed when I got home by taking 1 pill a day for a week, then back to the normal doesage of 4/day. I am not noticing any benefits from the Contrave now. 1. I'm wondering if the UTI was a side effect of the Contrave (it's listed as a possible side effect) and 2. Why am I not having any of the benefits? How do I get back to losing?

I have been taking Contrave for 4 months. I have not been able to increase the dose from 1 a day. It definitely helps food cravings. I have lost 14 lbs. I started having headaches in my temples checked my blood pressure and it was elevated. I am tapering my dose, Yesterday I took the Contrave and my B/P was 146/107. I have also noticed my heart rate will just shoot up when sitting still. I am on Cardizem CD 240 mg for heart rate and blood pressure. Wish I were able to continue the medication.
Hello Kim,
Sorry to hear about your severe UTI but I'm glad to hear that you're doing better now.
I have been browsing the Contrave official website for a few minutes and I noticed that I don't see UTI listed as a potential side effect. At the very bottom of their list they state that they do not show the full list of possible side effects so I'm wondering where you are sourcing that information from? I couldn't find UTI listed as a possible side effect on the NIH website either that's why I ask.
Addressing the second issue, in all sincerity there could be a few reasons that you could be having the issue of not seeing the benefits right now. One thought that comes to mind is that your body needs to get used to the medication again after stopping and it is taking a bit of time to adjust. Another issue is that Contrave itself does not actually cause you to lose weight, it simply assists with curbing your appetite. This means that if you are an emotional eater it is possible that due to the recent stresses of the UTI and being hospitalized your emotional cravings could simply be stronger than the medication.
My suggestion is that you discuss this issue with your doctor and do your best to get back into the routine that you were on prior to the UTI. I hope you have a wonderful day and please do let me know where I can find the list of side effects that shows the UTI so I may reference it in the future.
