Chronic Pancreatitis (Top voted first)

Updated

I have suffered from chronic pancreatitis for the last 20 years. Unfortunately the state stepped in and will not allow my doctor to write my medication for my Dilaudid any longer and I have not been able to find another doctor who will continue to write my prescription for dilaudid. I have never abused my pain medication and it is becoming quite frustrating and depressing that I cannot find a doctor to continue my treatment. it has been the only thing to keep me out of the hospital for the last 6 years. Up until six years ago I was in the hospital every two to three weeks for a period of about 3 years when I was at my worst. I had zero quality of life. Through this treatment I have managed to stay out of the hospital and maintain some quality of life. I do not wish to go back to living the lifestyle I used to live being in the hospital every couple of weeks. I would only need a couple of prescriptions a year to manage. PLEASE HELP....

It is very odd for the state to step in and tell a doctor they can't prescribe something. Is that really the reason they gave you for discontinuing it?

The DEA and FDA have put some new regulations in place that are more strict and require doctors to account for such prescriptions, they may also have to answer questions if these agencies aren't sure why they are prescribing a medication, but there is nothing saying they can't prescribe anything. They just have to be very careful that they prescribe appropriately. Unfortunately, some doctors choose not to deal with such issues, and have started refusing to prescribe such medications, unless a person is suffering severe intractable pain from a possibly fatal condition, such as stage for cancer.

The FDA does warn that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects. such as nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation, and dry mouth.

Have you consulted a pain management specialist? When you talk to them have you been asking for this specific medication? If so, many of them may assume you are just drug seeking. The best approach is to see a new doctor, without asking for any specific medication, but make sure they receive copies of your current medical records. Most are more comfortable prescribing according to a prior doctor's records, rather than someone asking for something specific.

Have they figured out what is causing your pancreatitis? Are you on any other medications?

I have seen and called many doctors and explained my history.....One doctor even said to me that I will have a problem finding someone to write my prescription because of the opiate epidemic in N.J...Dilaudid has been the only medication that takes the pain away when I have an attack, because my attacks have been so severe.....I have tried many other treatments and they have not worked unfortunately......I am open to anything that a doctor suggests...

I have had chronic pancreatitis for 11 years. I never smoked or drank and it isn't in my family. I have been to 4 specialists over the country. They say treat the symptoms. I have tried many options and the only thing that helps is 1 mg of dilaudid. I am at the er about once per week. My dr has me on oxycodone and 2 mg tabs of dilaudid. That doesn't always work. I go to the er and get 1 mg dilaudid iv and that helps but I never know how long it will work. Do you have any suggestions?

I understand what you are going thru, I am going thru the same thing. My pain dr wants me to get off of Dilaudid, but, cant. I am starting thru a pain program at the Univ of Nebraska that is 1 month long. I hope it works. I can no longer get 1 mf of Dilaudid at the ER anymore. The government no longer allows it even though my dr has sent a form to ask them to give it to me if necessary. You and I are in the same boat. My dr talked to me about the liquid cannabis. It is legal in iowa and colorado also. I'm sure that there are more states also. He said that he had a patient that got the gummy bears and all he did was bite just the head off of it and he was pain-free for hours. I don't know what state you live in, but, you might want to talk to your dr. I wish you luck and I would advise you to check with your pain dr and see if they have a great pain program that I am starting in sept.
