Any Way To Reverse Long-term Chantix Side Effects? (Page 6) (Top voted first)

Updated

My mother took Chantix several years ago in an effort to quit smoking. Well, she quit for a year. During that time, however, she became unbearably depressed. She has no history of depression.

She consulted a doctor several times and tried 3 different prescriptions, 1 of them being Zoloft. She stopped because she said they made her feel like she was just in a constant haze. She hasn't been to a doctor or a psychologist since then. In the mean time, she started smoking again because she thought that it would make the depression go away. It didn't.

Because of her experience with the 3 prescriptions, she is unwilling to go back to a doctor, and dismisses any notion of going to a psychologist. Our family has pleaded with her to keep trying, even if she has to tell whoever she sees that she won't try any drug for fear of the side effects; even if her only option is therapy, we want her to at least see someone. She is reluctant.

This side effect of major depression has persisted for years now, long after she stopped taking Chantix. Does anybody have any advice, or experience with the reversal of such severe side effects? My mother, and the rest of my family, is terrified that this is permanent, and she is terrified of the possibility that another prescription will result in even worse side effects.

I am researching chantix for my severe depression, crying spells (uncontrollable), loss of happiness, feelings of sadness, despair, loss of purpose, etc..... My life has not been the same since using Chantix. I don't want a legal suit. I want my life back. What can get me back to normal? It has been almost a year. I dismissed Chantix and thought since I was 53 I was hormonal. Not so, I am still the angry, depressed person now since using Chantix. Is there any help out there?

Yes, there's help, and if you research through this blog and find message number 36, read from there, I have had to pull myself back to a happy place, same as you many of us here require the same help after using Chantix/Champix, Champix is what it is known by in New Zealand, Nasty, NASTY drug....
but, please read the whole blog from 36, there have been many comments from people who have tried the same as me...
There is hope

Hi he has been taking the rosea now for a couple of weeks with no difference. He also takes fish oil, B complex and now we are looking at adding in the amino acids L-Tyrosine and L-Theanine.

I am confused about the rosea - how much should he take, all the brands have diferent amounts???

I posted before and wanted to update. Hubby took this evil drug in April and was suicidal. Anyway...

My husband has definitely been doing better. He is now on magnesium. Please look into this! Magnesium glycinate or taurinate is best - quite a high dose (hubby is on 240mg 4 times a day) Google magnesium for depression.
He also read the mood cure book, changed his diet and takes some supplements from the book.
He has just started councelling/cbt as well to help with the dark thoughts.
He is doing so much better.
It's got to be worth a try right?! Good luck. I will update again in a few more weeks.

Hi Ben,
Thank you for that information, all of which I had no idea there was any court trials, or advanced interrogation into the use, but in saying that, I must say all of us here on this blog have experienced many of these disorders... some in fact are still experiencing problems.
Here in New Zealand the medical practitioners are still prescribing the chantix or champix, as its known here. I can certainly recommend not even starting the medication. at the end of the day, we're all just guinea pigs for the pharmaceutical companies.
Many thanks again for your information

Blessed Be

Sounds familiar to my story. It's been one year since my husband stopped taking this horrible drug and he's never been the same since. He is moody, angry, depressed, and my kids even notice the change. I'm thinking about filing a legal case against the company. They do share a warning label but I want to prove that this drug irreversibly changes your brain. Completely changes your personality.

Cs... please get your husband to try a multi vitamin that contains a large dose of Rhodiola Rosea, if you also have a homoeopath in the area... ask for a single dose of high potency Thuja... the supplement I take daily, that contains Rhodiola Rosea, has 965mg of the herb... if you look back through my earlier posts, you will see that it gives very good results...
My posts are signed Rioghann as well as Riegan. Same pronunciation of my name...
Don't hesitate to ask for advice

Hi.. I only took 3 doses of Thuja 200c. The dosage of Rhodiola Rosea i take daily is 965mg, in a supplement called Stress and Stamina Formula, from Microgenics. I buy it this brand as it has the highest amount of the Rhodiola in it. About 6 months ago I started taking Arsenicum Album 3 doses over 2 days... only because i have dark patches once a month, and it keeps it at bay. Arsenicum album is another homeopathic remedy... dont give up... keep taking the strongest dosage of Rhodiola you can daily. Wake each morning and make a point of looking out into the day and seeing something that creates a smile, be it a tree, your children, a breath of fresh air.
I'm here, we are all here to help support each other.

I just started to take 500mg of the rhodiola, prior to that I was taking 250mg. I have been taking the 500mg in the AM when I get up. I feel better around 2-3 in the afternoon. I don't know if it is taking that long to get into my system, I am contemplating taking one in the AM and one in the PM before I go to bed.

Lately anything just stresses me out to the point I can't even think to figure out a solution to the problem, I wish I could go back in time and never take the pills. I was only on them a few weeks,I would have kept smoking had I known this was what I would end up with.

If you are talking about me, no, I took this for 13 days. I have quit smoking before for a year more than once, so I know what it feels like. What I am currently feeling is not normal.

Oh I am so sorry to hear what your Mother has gone through with this drug in her very laudable effort to stop smoking. All she was trying to do was be healthy. Now she is suffering because she was prescribed a drug that had actually made her ill. This drug started off an an anti-depressant. From what I've read, it wasn't very successful in helping people with depression, so, the drug company then marketted it as an aid to stopping smoking. In my opinion, just a desperate attempt by a Pharmaceutical Company to make money on a drug that didn't work. Your precious Mother is suffering because she tried to stop smoking and live healthier and longer for her precious family. You should, if at all possible, look into suing that company for the harm their product has done to your Mother.

This drug ruins lives!!! I almost lost my only son to Chantix, he tried to commit suicide after taking this drug. He had been off of it for 1 month and then tried to kill himself. He was a very happy person but he isn't the same now. I would never recommend anyone taking this drug not ever!!!!

My story is like many of the others posted. I took Chantix in 2008 quit smoking but went into deep depression. For two years went to work came home eat ,watched tv and found it hard to leave the house or enjoy anything. By a fluke took valium and it intially had a dramatic effect in liftiing depression. Of course have to be careful to keep doses small. Problem is every 3 to 4 months effect wears off i quit for 30 go 60 days then start again. But it never completly removed depression and I am having problems with memory i feel robbed of my life by Chantix makers wish neurologist could study us to find answer for why drug could alter brain chemistry permenatly. The same effects happenned to my husband. Doctors claim no meds can last once out of your system they are wrong

Don't be fooled by the FDA and your PCP. My husband was on Chantix for about one month. While he DID quite smoking, he was very nauseated on the medication the entire time. He reported this to his cardiologist. He had a major heart attack on 2/6/16. That same night, he had suicidal thoughts. I've talked to so many people since his heart attack who have taken Chantix. Some have reported they have had or know of patients who told them they had suicidal thoughts. I believe patients are simply reluctant to report these side effects. By the way, my husband is a non-smoker now. His cardiologist said, "Chantix is either a miracle, or it is your worst nightmare." Be very careful.

You should check out Amino Acid IV Therapy and/or buy a book called THE MOOD CURE by Julia Ross. You need to find a doctor who practices integrative medicine. Amino Acid IV treatments would be faster but the book contains many natural supplements that can help with several forms of depression!

My husband has been taking 5HTP as he was on Champix (another version of the same drug) to quit smoking and came off it.
