Allergic Reaction Prednisone Zithromax
(Newest replies first)

I am on vacation in Mexico. I have an awful wet cough and asthma symptoms. I have had this before and been medicated with Antibiotics, 5 mg prednisone and mucinex and albuterol. I started Zithromax and mucinex for 3 days the added 1 tab of prednisone 5mg. A couple hours later I had an allergic reaction. Breathing worse itchy eyes then hands then feet. 25 mg of benedryl stopped it. I have been using albuterol. Now I am afraid to take anything and go to a doc here. I have been sick with the cough for 5 days and dont go home for 6 days. My nights are bad.

Re: medical Hard Nox (# 3)
I went off everything except the albuterol when it happened. The next day I started Allegra. I think some of my issues were from the musty room! Tropical places do tend to have musty/mold. Well I think being sick made me a lil more vulnerable to my allergies! I would get worse in the room. Started allegra the next day and majorly improved. Guess I'll never know for sure but I finished up the vacation feeling much better. Btw I am allergic to sulfa that's how I knew when the reaction started and knew to take benedryl
There is a chance that medical Hard Nox is correct, the FDA does warn that the more medications you combine, the worse your side effects might be, itching and breathing issues are not always due to an allergic reaction, many medications can cause them as side effects, especially antibiotics and steroid class medications, and as I said, combining them may just make it worse. You could also experience dizziness, headache, and nausea.
I've also suffered a bad reaction to Sulfamethoxazole, just like Hard Nox, and I can never take it, again.... and I only had one dose left!!!
How are you doing, now, Grammy? Has there been any change?
I bet you had a reaction to the combination of meds. Albuterol already heightens the feeling of reactions for me, such as itching and hives which alerts me of what to stay away from.
It's a tough call what you took together, however I would call your pharmacist at home and ask them or your normal doctor. I'm sure he or she would try to contact you to give a suggestion.
I am not a doctor, so I shouldn't be offering my 2 cents, however I'd get off the prednisone and zithromax if the zithro is a generic. Generic meds overseas or in third world countries could be devastatingly harsh. They are not always a bioidentical as our generics are in certain countries, however I don't know your source. I'd stay on the albuterol to keep you clear when you have trouble breathing and find out if you have become allergic to the antibiotic, especially if it isn't the American version.(not sure where you acquired it. In Mexico, I wouldn't trust meds unless it came from a larger reputable pharmacy, and theere's probably very few and far between if any large pharmacy chains there.
I've become allergic to sulfamethoxazole while taking it. The second afternoon I had swelling and hive spell. Fever at 103.7 F. I was extremely ill and the most uncomfortable I've ever been. It was awful, so don't hesitate to find a professional if it doesn't go away asap.
Good Luck!
Re: Trish (# 1)
Nope I've had them all before. I am better now. Just a lil cough. I stopped everything. I hope I never get this again. I may never figure out what triggered it.
What have you taken before? Are these mess all new to you?
