Adderall Backorder (Page 6) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI take generic Adderall 20 mg for narcolepsy and there is not one local pharmacy that has it in stock. I have never had this problem before. The pharmacies are saying that it's on backorder from the manufacturer. Is anyone else having problems getting their scripts filled?
Holy Balls!!!!! This is much, much worse than I had anticipated. The independent place from last week ended up not being able to use my insurance...it's been YEARS since I have had to work this hard and call this many places trying to get my monthly meds. I ended up calling my doc's office bc, you know, e-scribe, and when I told her I was having trouble finding adderall anywhere she told me she had spent all morning calling CVS looking for another patient. It's bad. We better buckle up bc if this is not corrected soon I fear we are going to find ourselves in another shortage just like in 2011. And if you aren't familiar with what happened that time just Google "adderall shortage of 2011/2012." You can also just refer back to the beginning of this thread. It took years for that disaster to finally straighten out. I don't like to exaggerate but this, in my opinion, has officially reached the cause for alarm.
It's also very apparent that the manufacturers are not reporting to the FDA as they are required to do when there are market disruptions so I would implore you to please, PLEASE file a drug shortage report with the FDA and ASHP. The quicker they are alerted to the problem, the quicker it can try to be worked out. I wouldn't worry about whether you know what suppliers your pharmacy uses. If you feel comfortable including the dosage you're prescribed that will give a better look at how widespread the issue is. Otherwise, just report to simply make an alert to your area if nothing else. The more reports they receive, the greater cause for alarm on their part.
The following is an excerpt from the FDA website:
-Yes. Communication between FDA and stakeholders is an essential component of preventing and mitigating drug shortages. While the majority of information in this database comes from the manufacturers, we encourage all stakeholders, including health care professionals, professional groups, and patients, to notify FDA of drug shortage or supply issues.
You can send reports by email to [email protected].
The ASHP has a simple form you can fill out and submit. It can be found here: https://www.ashp.org/drug-shortages?loginreturnUrl=SSOCheckOnly
Both agencies collaborate and work together to assess shortages so I would encourage you to submit to both.
Re: OutOfMedsANdMad (# 963)
I think that was my post you're recalling. I apologize as I just now saw your post. I was mad too at the time, but now I am much more alarmed.
Today, I had a pharmacist from a local place explain to me how the medications are on backorder, and hearing the frustration in his voice that matches all of ours, I feel it's definitely not solely on the chain corporations. They are just more heavily restricted. So in other words, the chains are the first ones to have their stock dry up fast. And I guess the employees at my particular local Walgreens were just really bad at conveying the depth of the situation. They had me thinking it was a case of possible discrimination between me and them because of how weird they acted. But today when I spoke to a pharmacist from an independent store, he said the meds have been backed up for a while and he used the exact phrase, "it has been a roller coaster." To which I can completely sympathize bc now we're all starting to feel that effect.
I know it's exhausting and stressful, and it really doesn't help when the staff from your doctor's practice act like you're inconveniencing them. I've been there. But you are a patient and it's their job to help you, especially when these extra-unfortunate circumstances happen. And you are surely not the only patient that's dealing with it either. As practitioners, they're the ones with the authority to be able to speak to the pharmacist when they call on a patient's behalf. That's just how it is. But don't let them make you feel bad for it. Hang in there.
Re: bp01 (# 994)
The DEA relaxed the law requiring at least one face to face meeting between provider and patient before a Schedule II medicine is prescribed when the Public Emergency due to the pandemic went into affect. Due to this, it appears some are taking advantage of prescribing Adderall and other Schedule II medicine for ADHD. I agree those taking these medications have greatly increased due to being able to easily get it over the internet. These sites accept cash. All a person has to do is fill out a form online and talk with a provider by video or phone.
Re: bp01 (# 935)
What's going on now? I wasn't able to find independent pharmacy that had any in March. I did get 30mg from Walgreens after a hassle. Walgreens did this before when I was taking 50mg--5x10mg. Said it was too many. I was taking brand name then. New insurance--had to go to generic, so I went back to Walgreens. Now this.
The generic have not worked as well as the brand name and I have to go to each store to ask since I can't get anyone on the phone.
Re: bp01 (# 994)
Where does that leave those of us who have been relying on Adderall to help us though life for years? I can't make myself do much without it. Any ideas about who to contact? Thank you. Will show this to my in person psychiatrist.
Re: Antonio (# 1041)
I would suggest the following, which has been successful for me:
1. Don't call, but go to the pharmacy, speak to the pharmacist, not a technician.
2. Ask them to look you up in computer to verify this is a regularly medication for you that is medically necessary. I e. Establish that you're not a new "telemedicine adderall seeker." (Not to say telemedicine is bad but pharmacists are on the watch now with cII scripts). Demand is more than supply and they will tell everyone backorder, but what is really happening is that a smaller quantity is shipped than the demand so they're trying to politely say 'go elsewhere ').
3. Then ask if they use McKesson, AmerisourceBergen or Cardinal as a supplier and what dosages ARE available, in stock. They can see this info.
4. If you don't make progress, then the next pharmacy you try make sure they use a different supplier. For example if the pharmacist says they use Cardinal and are 3 weeks backordered, go to a pharmacy that uses McKesson or AmerisourceBergen.
5. Agree to take a partial order if they don't have a 30 day supply.
6. Use GoodRx instead of insurance and pay cash on a partial order. Tell your doctor you will need a new script sooner because of supply chain, only received a partial fill, and have it written in whatever pill dosage is most available -+ my experience is 30mg tabs are easier to get.
7. My Doctor and I found that the Easiest solution is to change to generic Focalin or Ritalin or Zenzedi until supply chain is restored. My doctor and I do this because zero medication is not an option.
Re: tim (# 1084)
My pharmacy on Long Island is completely out of stock and has been for weeks.
Re: GMC (# 1112)
The problem is the manufacturer they use for generic adderall is Teva. Walgreens have been the only ones to carry it, but I believe their plant shut down in California in May 2022. My Walgreens in Ohio has had the Teva generic adderall until this month , but it's a different manufacturer now Camber. Teva is the peach football or round pill 20 or 30 mg. Camber 20 mg is round and very light peach, and to me is much different than Teva. Hope this helps everyone.
I've been w/o adhd medication for almost 2 weeks. Been on adderall for over 6 yrs. 30 mg 2x per day. Was cut off from 60mg per day to 0 immediately causing withdrawal. Aprn tried Mydayis my insurance refused to cover, tried Vyvanse: out of stock and my insurance refused to cover, tried adderall again still out of stock. Was told by walgreens it would come in june 28, no response since. Somehow its ok for DEA, big pharm and insurance companies to force you into withdrawal and on and off mental health meds. Been dealing with this for years and am treated like a criminal and drug addict every time i try to pick up my perscription as scheduled. When i was going to Haiti and needed my prescription a week early walgreens pharmacist refused and snickered at me as if i was trying to abuse even though my aprn called it in. I was then told "just pick it up at a pharmacy there"....in Haiti....i finally was forced to show my flight info in order to get my prescription.
Re: tim (# 1137)
My walgreens actually got a generic shipment today so hopefully that is going to be a trend for other locations. Only problem with trying CVS, etc is that with controlled substance i believe you have to get a new script called in, it cant be transferred. With CHR in my area that can take days.
Re: DeeCaffeinated (# 1175)
It’s fascinating how rude they all are.
Re: ZR (# 1201)
I believe so. I saw the ABC DC in Bethlehem (which fills the Philly/South NJ area) had received the warehouse transfer on 7/2, and when I called Walgreens today they finally gave me an estimated date of tomorrow for my script to be filled.
Re: Stacy (# 1193)
I had been prescribed 120 mg of the generic Adderall by 6 different prescribers for a period of 20 years. Since the dosage is somewhat higher than most people require, my prescribers submitted a waiver to my insurance company on a yearly basis and my insurance paid for it without incident. Then in 2019, I turned 70. Apparently drugs like amphetamine salts aren't tested on senior citizens, so I feel like I've been kicked to the curb. I've had 5 prescribers in one year through no fault of my own [Staffing turnover at the psych office!] and was issued everything from 60 mg a day down to as low as 20 mg a day by people who think you can just cut back and function just the same.
I've been in hell since then with no end in sight. I have no health problems that would prohibit me from taking amphetamines like diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure. In fact, I have the opposite problem -- low blood pressure! And after 20 years on 120 mg a day, they don't even keep me awake. In fact, I take at least one nap a day, and still fall asleep as soon as I turn on the TV. The low dosages I've been on lately don't help my ADD and now I just feel like a slug who can't get out of its own way . . . which really sucks. Let's hope this backorder bs is short lived. Take care.
Re: Lo (# 1230)
I was so lucky to have found one small business pharmacy near my neighborhood that had it in stock after calling over 20 pharmacies.
I was already a week overdue and Med-less and my withdrawal symptoms from a 90mg daily dose (30mg 3x a day) was ROUGH. Like a fog hanging over my head with a bit of depression like symptoms (fatigue, not wanting to wake up, overeating, moodiness, etc).
Had this been a drug for another illness like liver failure or diabetes there would be a big stink about it, but since it’s an ADHD medication and the stigmas that go with mental health diagnoses PLUS the fact that it’s such a abused drug makes it seem like “oh it’s just adhd no big deal you won’t die”
Like I had one pharmacist at a Duane reade catch an attitude for me asking as if I was a junkie or something. It’s really sad that people who need these meds to function in a daily basis have to spend days and weeks without their meds and all we get is a “you’ll get when you get it good luck to you” as opposed to finding a way to get those meds available immediately.
Sorry for the rant but the past week was terrible for me and I imagine many of you as well and it bothers me so much that there doesn’t seem to be any help or empathy for us just a “stop your complaining and be patient”
Re: Sassy Lady (# 1207)
Stay the hell away from any Aurobindo. They actually threw me into withdrawals without any warning whatsoever. If I were a betting man, I’d wager that these generics contain a much much lower dose of the d-isomers if there is any at all. I lost an entire month of productivity… My heart breaks for everyone that begins to unexpectedly withdraw like I did…
Aurobindo see the U30’s.

Re: Jeno712003 (# 1191)
It was absolutely not you. Aurobindo did the same to me. I’m still picking up the pieces after that garbage destroyed a month of my life. It didn’t even occur to me that it was possible to receive a bunk prescription for adderall
Re: Rcma (# 1263)
I do much better late at night. Not so well in the mornings. My main issue is lack of motivation and concentrating for long periods of time. More than a couple of hours. Even with brand name Adderall, I failed to complete many, many projects. I have social anxiety disorder so I do much better with the written word than actually speaking.
The Focalin drops off abruptly after 3 hours which Adderall did not. I took 5- 10mg IR so I could adjust my dose each day. When I switched to generic doc increased to 3-20mg. I still struggle most days with an excellent day perhaps once a week. Such is life. Thank you for saying I appear to be coping. A lifetime of faking.
Re: AR (# 1295)
Walgreens told me that they are not able told order brand name adderall xr 30mg for the last 2 weeks. I've been getting it their for 3 years with no issue as I hate the generics! It looks like I'm gonna be stuck with a generic version this month and I'm not happy. Any idea what's going on here? I can't start switch pharmacies monthly.
I have taken Adderall for over 15 years and now can't get a refill due to the shortage. Walgreen says contact your doctor for alternative drugs. I have tried to contact my doctor with no success. It is a shame that people like me who take the adderall as perscribed have to go cold turkey without the adderall. I thought the medical field was to help us with ADHD.
Re: farmer (# 8)
It's ridiculous. I can't deal, I end up sleeping all day and getting nothing done. Save my adderall. I'm so sad
